Meeting your education requirements
While accountants may believe that they have plenty of time to negotiate the new licensing regime, it is clear there remains some uncertainty in the industry about what you need to do to comply, including education requirements.
- Is it better to undertake the training now or closer to the July, 2016 deadline?
- Does completing a course automatically qualify you to recommend SMSFs?
- Where can you undertake the relevant training?
What are the education requirements?
The required education will vary depending upon the level of advice you want to provide. As a basic obligation however, anyone who wishes to become licensed or authorised under an AFSL needs to meet ASIC’s minimum training standards.
The ASIC Regulatory Guide (RG146) outlines the training standards required as well as a list of the generic and specific competencies that must be attained depending upon the type and level of advice you wish to deliver.
If you believe that you may have already undertaken sufficient education and compliance training to meet the necessary standards required to be authorised to provide SMSF advice, the team at Lifespan can assess your education and training records to help you understand whether you can be authorised immediately or whether you need to undertake further education. For any questions regarding your current qualifications contact us direct on 02 9252 2000.

Professional accountants holding a CPA or CA designation will be granted an automatic exemption for the Tier 1 Generic Knowledge subject and are eligible for the Accountant SuperPackage program.
These programs are currently designed and delivered in a self-study format with online support through Kaplan’s online portal (KapLearn).
Alternatively, subject to minimum numbers, Lifespan and Kaplan can also provide a blended solution including in-house face to face workshops. These workshops support the online learning and combines the practical application to the theory.
Accountants wishing to provide advice
With the accountants exemption being removed accountants wanting to provide advice will need to complete the following specialist knowledge competencies:
- Financial advice
In addition to the above minimum requirements, accountants wanting to offer their clients broader advice solutions can also undertake additional studies to increase the levels of advice they are able to offer.
An outline of the Kaplan Accountant SuperPackage (SMSF advice education) studies available through Lifespan and Kaplan is featured in the following guide:
